Key Responsibilities

  1. Engineering Design and Analysis
  • Review and Approval: Conduct final reviews and approvals or audits of new engineering designs. Ensure designs adhere to design principles and theories.
  • Coordination: Coordinate design efforts across disciplines to ensure integration with existing technology. Pioneer new engineering services and management methods.
  • Innovation: Lead efforts in developing and integrating new engineering services and innovative management methods.
  1. Maintenance Management
  • Execution: Manage the execution of maintenance strategies by establishing appropriate structures, systems, and resources.
  • Standards and Specifications: Set maintenance standards, specifications, and service levels in line with organizational objectives to ensure optimal operational availability.
  • Efficiency Monitoring: Monitor maintenance efficiencies to ensure they align with organizational goals, adjusting strategies as necessary.
  1. Governance and Risk Management
  • Resource Management: Allocate, control, and report on resources effectively. Compile and manage risk logs, addressing significant risks per sound risk management practices.
  • Technical Consulting: Provide technical consulting services to minimize engineering risks and ensure compliance with governance standards.
  1. Knowledge Management
  • Knowledge Sharing: Implement and manage knowledge-sharing initiatives, including short-term assignments and secondments, to support individual development and operational requirements.
  • Information Exchange: Monitor and manage the exchange and protection of information to ensure effective knowledge management.
  1. Financial Management
  • Fund Management: Ensure the availability and management of funds to meet Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) objectives within the engineering environment.
  • Project Portfolio: Manage the operational capital project portfolio, ensuring effective resourcing and adherence to organizational needs.
  • Expenditure Monitoring: Control and monitor expenditure according to the budget to ensure efficient cash flow management and adherence to financial objectives.
  1. People Management
  • Human Resources: Develop, motivate, and utilize human resources to ensure a competent knowledge base for engineering services. Set and monitor performance standards for subordinates.
  • Performance Management: Manage the development and performance of team members, addressing any deviations to achieve departmental objectives.

Essential Qualifications and Attributes

  1. Educational and Professional Requirements
  • Engineering Degree: A Bachelor of Engineering (B Eng) or Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSc Eng) or equivalent qualification is required.
  • Post-Qualification Experience: Six years of post-qualification experience in engineering is necessary.
  • Registration: Compulsory registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) or relevant council as a Professional Engineer.
  1. Knowledge and Skills
  • Engineering Expertise: Strong knowledge of engineering design, analysis, and maintenance. Proficiency in mobile equipment operating skills and process knowledge.
  • Project Management: Experience in programme and project management, including strategic capability, problem-solving, and decision-making.
  • Financial and Administrative Skills: Proficiency in financial management, budgeting, and report writing. Ability to manage expenditure and allocate resources effectively.
  • Leadership and People Management: Strong leadership skills, including team leadership, conflict management, and change management.

  • Computer Skills: Proficiency in computer applications, including computer-aided engineering applications.
